‘Zidane’ hosting lucrative six-a-side tourney in Duhaney Park

June 27, 2025

Sport radio talk show host Christopher 'Zidane' Matthews will host a lucrative six-a-side, winner-take-all football competition this Saturday in the community of Duhaney Park, with a cash prize of $300,000.

Matthews, co-host of the afternoon sport talk show Sports Desk on Omega/KLAS radio with Orville Higgins, said he has been living in the community for more than 35 years and as a well-known sports broadcaster in Jamaica, he is often asked to do something for the community.

He said he recently found the inspiration and used his contacts to generate support for the competition, and he expects teams from all across the island to converge on the Caldwell football field to showcase their skills and battle for the attractive cash prize.

"Being on the radio and being in media, you get to meet a lot of prominent people, a lot of wealthy people, who sometimes prefer to sponsor things or do things they think will benefit other people," Matthews related.

"So I decided finally that I am going to use my contacts and my name to garner some support and host a big competition, and this is a big one - J$300,000 for the winning team. Winner takes all," he declared.

"The J$300,000, not many competitions in Jamaica offer such a prize money to the winning team."

To give themselves a chance at the lucrative cash prize, teams are required to pay an entry fee of $15,000.

Matthews pointed out that the Caldwell football field is a special and popular playing field for Duhaney Park players, and that some of the most noted names from the community have at some time graced the playing field with their presence and skills.

"It is a neat little six-a-side field and that is the area where I grew up specifically, and that is why I decided to keep the competition there," he shared.

"I play football there and that is where many of the star players that came out of Duhaney Park played football at some time.

"Derrick Smith, a former Portmore player, Jomo Gordon, formerly of Waterhouse and Harbour View, and his brother Omar 'Fuzzy Gordon, my favourite Duhaney Park player of all time, as well as former national under-17 and Wolmer's star Akeem Brown, who also grew up in that section of the community," Matthews pointed out.

"Current players like national striker Warner Brown, national and Mount Pleasant goalkeeper Shaquan Davis and MoBay United talisman Shaniel Thomas, they all played football on that field. So it is a popular football field in the community," he noted.

"But now we are extending an invitation to all teams across Jamaica. Any team can enter, whether you are a Super League team or a Premier League team."

He added that the event will extend into the night with an after party.

"Liquor will be on sale and food will be on sale. The venue will be organised very neatly and I know people have concerns about the sun, but they will not have to worry about that because we are going to have lots of tents for everybody. After the football in the day, we go into the night with a party. But it is all about the big football extravaganza that will take place in the day for the cash prize of $300,000.

The first game of the day is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.
