Holness: Jamaicans turning out to keep gov't in office
Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) leader and Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness says the Jamaican electorate has recognised that the stakes are high in the general election and is coming out to keep him in office.
"I think many Jamaicans realise that they can't gamble with their future, so you're going to find many Jamaicans coming out to make sure that they protect the Government," Holness told The Star minutes after voting at Mona High School in the St. Andrew Eastern constituency.
Holness said he has been making calls and, based on what he saw at Mona, "the lines seem robust and people are coming out."
In addition, Holness said his party has conducted internal polls in 23 seats and is leading.
He said this is an indication of how Jamaicans will vote today.
"You could extrapolate from what I said. We polled 23 seats and we are ahead in 20. These are the seats that we consider swing seats based on the local government elections. With that, you can likely figure out what the outcome of the election will be," Holness said.
The Electoral Office of Jamaica reported that, as of 11:00 a.m., voter turnout was 14.8 per cent.
