Defending champions Cavalier Soccer Club might have won, but pulled off a lucky escape in a topsy-turvy opening fixture as their opponents, Harbour View FC, got the last scoring opportunities in feature game of a Jamaica Premier League double-header at Stadium East.

In the meantime, last season's beaten finalists, Mount Pleasant Football Academy, and Montego Bay United played out an exciting high-profile 2-2 draw at Drax Hall, as the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) kicked off its first round of matches in the 2025-26 season yesterday.

The home team, Mount Pleasant, took the lead after 28 minutes through Shaquile Bradford.

Four minutes into the second half, MoBay equalised through Jahmari Clarke, before Dwight Merrick fired them into the lead three minutes later at the 52nd.

However, Mount Pleasant would salvage a point, when 16-year-old Owen Jumpp netted the equaliser, seven minutes from full time.

At Turner Oval, a brace from veteran striker Levaughn Williams (2nd, 57th) saw host Chapelton Maroons to a 2-1 win over last season's quarter-finalists Tivoli Gardens FC.

Treasure Beach also started on a positive note, after scoring two second half goals for a 2-0 win over fellow promoted team Spanish Town Police FC, at St Elizabeth Technical High School. Shaquile Jones fired the home team in front just after the hour. And Daniel Hardy sealed the win in time added.

At the Stadium East, Waterhouse FC dispatched Molynes United 2-0, with goals in each half from Mario Simms (12th) and Colorado Murray (56th).

Waterhouse's assistant coach Jermaine Miller said it was a satisfying performance despite some lapses in the second half.

"At times we made the game a little more difficult than it was. But we came out (in the) second half, got another early goal and it was just game management from there," he said.

"It was a good performance. It's work in progress. It's is the first game so we are not going to be too hard on the players," Miller added.

Waterhouse got off to a good start when Simms coasted in at the back post and planted a header past the goalkeeper for the opening goal.

Both teams had good chances to score afterwards, with Leonardo Jibbison and Murray wasting good chances for Waterhouse, while Tyrique Wilson had a great opportunity for Molynes .

Waterhouse added a second 11 minutes into the second half after Murray hit a low shot inside the near post to make it 2-0.

Molynes' coach Jermaine Thomas said they started flat and never recovered.

"In the second half we stepped up and got some results as it relates to the changes we made. But they scored against the run of play, and 2-0 down, it became a bit more difficult," Thomas stated.

In the feature game, defending champions Cavalier SC and Harbour View FC played out an uneventful 0-0 draw.

In a game of very few chances, Harbour View controlled possession and were the protagonists for much of the match.

However, it was Cavalier who had the first real chance of the match, which Shaquile Stein put wide of the mark. Adrian Reid Jr. got another good chance for Cavalier but headed over from six yards.

Harbour View would create two outstanding chances in the last minute, but Rohan Brown, firstly, fired over the bar from the top of the area; before putting the ball wide of the target from an angle, after getting by goalkeeper Jaedine White.

Cavalier's assistant coach, David Laylor, said they should have taken all three points.

"I think we should have come away with the win. You saw the empty goal Stein got. But after missing that one they did well to fight to get the draw nonetheless," he contended.

Harbour View's Bjorn Thomas thought they could have done better.

"We lacked composure in the last part of the game. But that's football. We have a point for the first game and we just have to work and improve going forward," he said.
