After murder case freedom Mavado’s son faces gun charges

October 23, 2025

Dantay Brooks, the son of dancehall star Mavado, is once again facing trouble with the law after being charged with several gun-related offences.

Police say Brooks was charged on Tuesday with assault at common law, unlawful wounding, possession of a prohibited weapon, and using a prohibited weapon to commit a scheduled offence.

The charges stem from an incident in Cassava Piece, St Andrew, in the area known as 'Pon Di Gaza', about 9:30 p.m. on July 12.

Sources told The Star that Brooks is also being investigated in connection with another firearm-related crime.

This comes months after the 23-year-old was freed in March when the Court of Appeal overturned his 2021 conviction for the murder of Lorenzo Thomas. His co-accused, Andre Hinds, was also freed.

Prosecutors had alleged that Brooks and Hinds were among a group of men who entered a home in Cassava Piece and shot Thomas before forcing his father into another room. That attack took place on June 5, 2018.

Brooks' latest brush with the law comes shortly after his father, Mavado, whose real name is David Brooks, returned to Jamaica following seven years overseas. The entertainer met with police upon his return, and a long-standing warrant for his arrest was vacated.
