The police are now leading the search for two young children who were reported missing in Moneague, St Ann, on Tuesday night, a high-ranking official has revealed.

The police official acknowledged, however, that "there is a probability that they are alive and there is a probability that they are dead".

"We are currently combing the area searching for them," the official said.

The names of the two children, a boy and a girl, ages one and three years-old, have not been released.

Two adult relatives, a man and a woman, have been identified as persons of interest by investigators probing the disappearance, the police official told The STAR on Wednesday.

Investigators declined to discuss the circumstances leading up to the two children being reported missing, noting that the probe is ongoing "and we have to be guarded as to what is said".

The official said additional support, including drones and search dogs, has been deployed to assist with the search operations.
