History-making Denbigh win ISSA hockey double

March 24, 2026

DENBIGH High School created history yesterday as the May Pen-based institution completed the double in ISSA Under-19 hockey after defeating St Andrew High in the female final and Kingston College in the male final.

In the female final, it was sweet revenge for Denbigh after being beaten by St Andrew High in the preliminary round. The game ended 0-0 at the end of full and extra time, before Denbigh won 3-2 in a penalty shootout.

It was first-time glory for Denbigh among the boys. Following their third-place finish last year, they also won 3-2 in a penalty shootout after both teams had played to a 1-1 scoreline.

Winning coach Richard Piper was pleased with his team's success.

"It is a wonderful feeling knowing that we were able to pull off the double. As I said earlier, being a past student and a player, we have never won the boys' title, and to do so as a coach, plus taking the double, makes it even more gratifying."

Despite winning both titles, Piper is unsure about continuing in the programme.

"I am extremely happy for the kids, but this could be my last time coaching here at Denbigh. Drastic changes will have to be made in the future if I am to return," said Piper.
