Brown nets stoppage-time winner for Jamaica U15s
Kelvin Brown's stoppage-time goal ensured that Jamaica's Under-15 Reggae Boyz turn back Curacao 1-0 in their final League B, Group D football game at the Stadion CD Guillermo Trinidad in Oranjestad, Aruba, yesterday.
The young Reggae Boyz ended the group stage with maximum nine points, three more than Belize in second. Curacao finished third on three points, while Aruba ended at the foot of the standings without a point.
Jamaica thus advanced to the semi-finals, where they will square off against regional arch-rivals Trinidad and Tobago on Friday.
After a cagey start, it was Curacao who created the first real chance, when Quyvonn Sluis floated a ball into the box, but Jyano Rojer could not place his header on target, after towering over the Jamaican defence.
Jamaica would create their first opportunity moments later when Brown broke away down the right and elected to shoot from a tight angle when Carlando Morris was unmarked at the far post.
Morris then got a great chance minutes later, after making space for himself in the area, but he blasted over from 12 yards.
Brown had his best chance of the half in the 28th minute, but his curling, right-footed effort was parried away by the Curacao goalkeeper, Jean-Jacques Ricardo.
Curacao also had a good chance towards the end of the period. However, Giordyson Koeiman's shot was not strong enough to trouble Jaheime Gray in goal.
Both teams continued to trade attacks after the break and created good openings, but they failed to take advantage.
However, Jamaica got better as the half wore on and had good opportunities through Tevin Savage, Morris, Davion Clarke and Kenrick Brown.
Kelvin Brown also blasted a good chance over the top from the edge of the box, and headed a half chance over the bar.
However, the young Reggae Boyz would grab the all-important goal in added time, when Kelvin Brown put Samuel Taylor through on goal on a counter attack.
Taylor's shot hit the bar, but it came back into play and Brown was on hand to tuck home the loose ball.
