Gordon clearing path for another d’Cup title
Defending daCosta Cup champions Garvey Maceo are well on their way to defending their rural area schoolboy football title, after booking their place in the second round of the competition earlier this week.
The 'Cubans', as they are affectionately called, are sitting comfortably atop Zone N on 19 points, following their sixth straight victory after beating Foga Road 2-1 on the road on Tuesday.
Coach Merron Gordon, despite their dominance so far, believes his players need rest to recover from playing four games in eight days.
For Gordon, this season is shaping up similar to their 2021 title-winning season; however, there are still some boxes he wants to tick before they face stiffer opposition.
"We need to be sharper. When we started out we were chasing games, but we have to get better, because when you go on to face tougher teams, you may never have the chance to come back," said Gordon.
The opening-day draw against Kemps Hill opened the eyes of the champions, who have since gone on to win all their matches, whilst scoring 27 goals and conceding five.
According to Gordon, the aim now is to get all the points possible, with the goal of solidifying their playing style for the rigours and challenges of the second round and beyond.
"I know we will get it right. The good thing is to peak at the right moment, it is not about playing well now, but getting results and then gradually building in the tournament. What I am pleased with is that our cohesion in terms of our defensive shape is getting better, and that is a good sign for us," he said.
Gordon and his troops have one preliminary-round fixture to contest, and that is at home against the winless Winston Jones High tomorrow.
"For that game, I feel I will be giving some players a rest because it has been a gruelling schedule. Having said that, we can't take any team lightly, because as defending champions everyone is going to come at us," Gordon stated.
