C’down too good for Hydel
Camperdown High virtually secured their spot in the next round of the ISSA/Digicel Manning Cup following another 1-0 win over Hydel High in their Group 'C' return encounter at the Alpha Boys Academy yesterday.
Their seventh straight win push the Christopher Bender-coached Camperdown to 21 points, that is eight clear of second-place Mona High, who moved to 13 points following a 5-2 win over Tivoli Gardens.
It was Hydel, however, who looked more purposeful in the opening exchanges against the group leaders Camperdown, and it took some brilliant goalkeeping from Deshawn White to deny Shahidi Hart on minute 10.
Left-winger Jordane Cameron also had the Camperdown backline busy, however, the St Catherine-based team could not put away their chances in the opening 15 minutes.
They would be made to rue those chances as the red and blue-clad Camperdown would take the lead in the 19th minute when Rasheed Grant rifled in a shot in the roof of the net, after reacting first to a blocked shot off a corner kick.
Both teams failed to put together any real meaningful opportunities until in the second half when Hydel had two bites at the cherry to get on the scoresheet.
On minute 58, Tyrees Simms saw his shot come off the post following a corner kick, and then a minute later, Ewan Hamilton watched as his firm drive from outside the area ricochets off the post and back into play.
That frustration would lead to defender Damion Gentles being sent off following a second yellow card in time added on.
Winning coach Christopher Bender praised his players for their commitment following their second straight one-nil win over Hydel.
