Doctor siblings give back to Seaview Gardens
Today, the Seaview Gardens 'Jackson 5' siblings will be giving back to their community by offering free medicals to more than 100 children.
The siblings, who all hail from the inner-city community and faced various challenges growing up, have all achieved success in their respective fields. They were highlighted by THE STAR in 2023. Speaking with the news team earlier this week, Dr Omar Jackson and his sister Dr Sherri-Ann Jackson, said they are hoping that this gesture will help to ease the financial burden that back-to-school expenses place on adults.
"Parents are struggling all over with back-to-school expenses. My parents are very hard workers and I remember how difficult it was when it came on to this time of the year. I remember a time when we didn't even have electricity. Things are even more expensive now so we just want to help persons who are on that similar journey," said Jackson.
"A medical costs about $3,500 and if we can eliminate that expense, it will stop a gap for these mothers and fathers. I am inviting everyone to take their child along with the medical form and immunisation card and make use of the service. We will not be offering immunisation services, but if a child has any that is outstanding we will be making referrals," Jackson added.
This is the second staging of the event and Jackson said that last year's staging attracted close to 100 children. He stated that while they are not in a position to offer monetary donations, they are donating their skills.
"In this venture, it is not just my sister and I but other family members and friends are stepping in and offering their services, for example, the persons who are providing the sound systems and so on. We were hoping to give away school bags and so on but that did not work out for this particular time. However, this project will be ongoing so we are expecting to add on services as we go by," he said.
