Head of the Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch, Assistant Commissioner Gary McKenzie is warning persons attending the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Athletics Championships (Champs) to park in designated areas.

"Sidewalks are off-limits for parking," he told THE STAR. "Vehicles improperly parked along the roadways or sidewalks will be towed if their drivers aren't present to move them, and in some cases, prosecuted. This policy isn't just about preventing chaos, it's about protecting everyone's safety."

"When clusters of vehicles form in unapproved areas, it gives unscrupulous persons the opportunity to break in. We advise everyone to park only in designated areas with proper security," he added.

For the duration of Champs, which began yesterday and culminates on Saturday at the National Stadium, the police have implemented several tactical measures geared at easing traffic congestion and providing security. Critical corridors have once again been reconfigured into one-way routes.

"We have Aurther Wint Drive split into two flows, one segment running eastbound from Tom Redcam Drive to Statue Road and another heading west from Mountain View Avenue to Statue Road. These designated routes are vital in channelling traffic smoothly into the event area," he said. McKenzie noted that other roads such as North and Central avenues, which funnel into Arthur Wint Drive, will also be closely monitored.

Despite the event lasting for five days, McKenzie noted that the final day is usually the most challenging.

"It's when the movement of traffic, both vehicles and pedestrians, peaks. Unlike many other events, people don't come in all at once or leave all at once, which helps. But during peak periods, especially when the finals of the relay races are under way [on Saturday], and the schools' supporters flood in, managing the flow becomes a real test," he said.

McKenzie added that a critical aspect of the plan is maintaining emergency access. With the stadium located close to Bustamante Hospital for Children, he underscored that "our roadways, particularly along Arthur Wint Drive, must always allow ingress for emergency vehicles".

"In case of an emergency, police will give priority to those needing immediate help," he said. McKenzie also commended the residents of surrounding areas, including Stadium Gardens, for their cooperation. He said they have worked closely with the police, easing the strain during peak hours.

"Communication with our neighbours is crucial," he added. "Their cooperation has been instrumental in making these measures work."
