Don Soup: Jamaica’s dancehall dynamo on world stage
Jamaica's vibrant dancehall culture has long held a prominent position on the global stage, and it's precisely this rich cultural heritage that has propelled Don Soup to the forefront of dancing for international superstar Chris Brown.
Born in Spanish Town, St Catherine, the 25-year-old, whose given name is Anthony Campbell, embarked on a life-changing journey when he left the island to live with his family abroad at the tender age of three. However, distance did not deter him from embracing his Jamaican roots and channelling them into his passion for dance.
Speaking strong Jamaican Patois, Don Soup proudly shares, "My main dance styles are dancehall, bruk up, and flex'n. My style is deeply rooted in my cultural background, as these dance forms were created by Jamaicans."
The performer was part of Chris Brown's team that visited Jamaica recently as part of the entertainer's 'Under the Influence' Tour. He finds immense joy in what he does while proudly representing himself and his culture.
"It has been an incredible journey--fun and familial. You have to be consistent, believe when nobody else does, and trust the process, because success doesn't happen overnight," Don Soup said.
Recalling a memorable trip back to Jamaica, he shares, "My favourite memory was being surrounded by my people and immersing myself in the culture. It was both refreshing and grounding. I also had a great time at Uptown Mondays! Unfortunately, I didn't get the chance to visit Spanish Town."
